Bharatanatyam Dance Show by Sarajan Nartan Academy

20/07/2017: 12:30 PM - 1:30 PM

On Thursday 20th July at 12.30pm, Akademi South Asian Dance will present in Devonshire Square's Western Courtyard an enthralling Bharatanatyam dance show by Sarajan Nartan Academy. The free attendance performance is part of the “Tales of Silk and Music” Indian Dance Festival organised by Devonshire Square to mark the UK-India Year of Culture.

Bharatanatyam is a major genre of Indian classical dance that expresses Hindu religious themes and spiritual ideas; the dance originated in Tamil Nadu, one of the 29 states of India which lies in the southernmost part of the Indian Peninsula.
Bharatanatyam style is noted for its fixed upper torso, legs bent or knees flexed out combined with spectacular footwork, a sophisticated vocabulary of sign language based on gestures of hands, eyes and face muscles.
