"Dreamy Tales of Sugar" by multi-award winning sugar artist Jacqui Kelly
5/12/2019: 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM
On Thursday 5th December, from 1pm to 3pm, the historical Devonshire Square’s Western Courtyard will be hosting “Dreamy Tales of Sugar”, a stunningly imaginative sugar artwork, exclusively created for Devonshire Square’s “Art for Love” Winter Festival by Scottish sugar artist and pastry chef Jacqui Kelly, multi gold medal winning and Best in Show at Cake International 2014 London.
Inspired by “The Blue Fairy Book” by Scottish novelist and poet Andrew Lang, the artwork celebrates the Classic Fairy Tales and The Golden Age of Children’s Literature, as well as the inspirational power of this universal literary genre on creative making.
The 1-meter wide sugar artwork has been conceived by the artist as an enthralling three-dimensional composition of old-fashioned leather books, open to reveal their fairy tales within. Delicate figures with intense detailing around them, enrobed in edible gold and silverleaf, will be seen spilling out from the magical scenarios depicted on the exquisitely decorated books.
The layers used to create Red Riding Hood trees have been hand-painted and hand cut on edible wafer paper and mint pastillage. Aladdin’s magic carpet has been pristinely decorated on vanilla bean meringues while Hansel & Gretel’s house is made of gingerbread encrusted with hand pulled sugar sweeties.
Attendees will also be treated to a tasting experience of one of the pastry chef’s delicious confectionary preparations.
“Dreamy Tales of Sugar” - a FREE attendance, family friendly event - is part of the Devonshire Square’s “Art for Love” Winter Festival 2019, organised and curated by the Devonshire Square’s Events Team to raise awareness and funds in aid of The Connection, London’s busiest homeless charity.
The unique artwork will be set up next to the Devonshire Square’s iconic Giving Tree and will be unveiled on the Festival’s opening day. The event will be marked by a mesmerizing dance choreography, “A Winter Fairy Tale”, presented by Royal Ballet trained ballerinas Crystalline, executed to music from Cinderella ballet.
